This late Victorian house is on
land that was cleared and settled in the late
1700s. Maple Hill Farm was once the home
of William Oliver Vaughan, a member of one of
the founding families in Hallowell. The
Vaughan family once held a grant of land that
extended from the banks of the Kennebec River on
the east to the shore of Cobbosseecontee Lake to
the west. Maple Hill Farm is located
roughly in the middle of this original land
grant. Mr. Vaughan commanded his own
militia in the early 1800s and raised "fine-wooled
sheep" while being heavily involved with
shipping on the Kennebec River. The
present house was built in 1906 and was once
owned by Winthrop Worcester who grew corn and
raised beautiful dairy cows. Maple Hill
Farm served as a halfway stop for watering
horses for a stagecoach line that ran between
Hallowell and Emery's Grove on Cobbosseecontee
Lake. Renovations completed in 2001 honor
this history while bringing the inn up to modern
standards. |
